day four
Private Full Day Robben Island & City Tour
After an early breakfast, meet your driver for your transfer for your full day tour. Experience all the must sees of Cape Town with this private tour following the history of Democracy in South Africa from the dark days of Apartheid to the spirit of Triumph felt so strongly today.
Begin by travelling to the V&A Waterfront where you will board the Robben Island Ferry (weather permitting) for your voyage across the bay to the infamous maximum-security prison that once was home to various political prisoners including the late Nelson Mandela. This World Heritage Site and museum is a poignant reminder of the price paid for freedom. The excursion includes a return ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island and an integrated tour of the prison. After the tour, board the ferry for your return to the mainland.
Upon return to the mainland, enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to discover how the Malay slaves influenced the culture, food and aesthetics of this beautiful city and its people. Formerly known as the Malay Quarter, this picturesque corner of Cape Town well-known for its vast collection of colourful houses and cobble stone streets, became home to the Cape Muslim community and many freed slaves after the abolition of slavery in 1834.
In the heart of the city enjoy a short walk through the Company Gardens. From squirrels to a variety of plant life, it’s just a happy place to soak up some Cape Town vibes and enjoy the aviaries and fishponds. On the Wale Street end of the garden, you will find a monument which was created to commemorate the life and work of Desmond Tutu, lovingly referred to by South Africans as ‘The Arch’ and a tribute to the values of the South African Constitution. Arch for Arch was installed beside historic St. George’s Cathedral aka ”People’s Cathedral” for its role in the resistance against apartheid.
Step inside the Slave Lodge which explores the history of these unwilling immigrants and how they have contributed to the richness and diversity of South African history.
As you drive through the city you shall get a feel for the cultural melting pot that it is. Continue your city tour with a stop at the Castle of Good Hope. Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment store, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.
The drive through the city will also take you past the Houses of Parliament, the Grand Parade and City Hall; from where Nelson Mandela first addressed South Africans after his release in February 1990. The tour ends with drop off at your hotel.
Continue to Table Mountain where you shall reach the top by cable car (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). Enjoy the panoramic views over the city with Robben Island lying sleepily in Table Bay. Also, get a bird’s eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard. The tour ends with drop off at your hotel in the early evening.
