Known for its tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples, Thailand is a popular destination amongst most travellers who love its friendly, fun-loving, historic culture.
But Thailand is also known for one more attraction: its elephants! Native to the country, elephants exist all over Thailand and numerous camps and sanctuaries have been set up to care for injured or in-danger animals and to allow visitors to lend a hand in their care.
As part of our tailor-made tours to Thailand, we can build in a visit to one of the best elephant sanctuaries in the area so you’ll create memories that will stay with you forever.
Phuket, a short flight from Bangkok, is the biggest island in Thailand, sitting on the Andaman Sea in the southern region of the country. Bordering the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is one of our favourites. The team pioneered ethical elephant tourism on the island, rescuing sick, injured and old elephants who have spent their entire lives working in the logging and tourism industries. Endorsed by National Geographic and World Animal Protection, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a final home where rescued elephants have the freedom to roam, bathe, forage and socialise freely.

The new, 600-metre-long and 6-metre-tall canopy walkway is the only one of its kind in Phuket and takes ethical elephant tourism to new heights – literally! To provide the elephants with maximum freedom in the jungle below, visitors can now observe them both from above as well as from a safe and respectful distance whilst hiking through the 30-acre sanctuary as part of a guided tour.
With the freedom and happiness of the elephants their top priority, the sanctuary offers full-time veterinary care, 30 acres of lush, tropical land and a dedicated team to prepare supplementary food and look after the wellbeing of the herd.
Your visit supports their special work and guarantees to leave you feeling inspired and in awe of these majestic animals.
