Savile Row Travel

“For years, I’ve been told by colleagues that Mauritius is a very special island and, having constantly seen a ream of clients rebook the same properties for the same week pretty much as soon as they returned from their previous holiday, it’s fair to say I was intrigued as to what spell Mauritius held over those that had visited. I was about to find out!”

Our Director and Chief Operating Officer, Matt Callaway, has just returned from a week exploring Mauritius, otherwise known as the Paradise Island in the Indian Ocean. As part of a group of travel specialists hosted by the Mauritian Promotion Tourism Authority (MPTA), Matt visited 20 luxury hotels across the island to learn which would perfectly suit each of our clients! Starting in the South, the group travelled clockwise visiting resorts, meeting locals and tourism leaders, and generally experiencing Mauritian hospitality at its finest.

“We touched down at the wonderfully named Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, or MRU as I’ve generally referred to it during my many years in travel. Instantly, we were greeted with smiles and warm welcomes as we were whisked off to the Jetprime lounge where a feast of fresh fruit, coffee and pastries were waiting, along with an ice-cold glass of champagne… rude not to! This meet and greet service is something Savile Row Travel have started offering more and more – in addition to the obvious comfort, it speeds up the immigration process and gets you out into the lush green surroundings as quickly as possible.”

“Throughout the week, we were treated to a spectrum of unique and wonderful resorts, ranging from luxurious stalwarts such as the Four Seasons Anahita, The Oberoi, and the newly renovated Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa, contemporary boutique options such as 20 Degrès Sud and Paradise Cove, and the quirky and cute Bubble Lodge situated on the gorgeous Ille Aux Cerf on the east coast of the island.”

“One thing that became abundantly clear quickly was that Mauritius has a resort to suit everyone! Something else that I found quite striking was the presence of locally owned hotel groups and the importance they played within the Mauritian economy. LUX group, Constance, Beachcomber, Attitude and Sunlife – to name just a few – are such important entities within Mauritian society (and all wonderful in their own right) so it’s no wonder that the level of hospitality and service is so high that employees within Mauritian properties sought after across the globe.”

Sights to see

Sample the food

Stay in Port Louis, the country’s capital, to make the most of the fabulous scene here. Visit the food market for a cacophony of French, English, Creole and Mandarin dishes, underlining just how multicultural Mauritius really is. Your guides will be quick to rave about local delicacies such as Dholl Puri, Gateaux Piments and Mauritian dumplings which are readily available from food trucks on the public beaches. But the rest of the cuisine is equally fantastic, from fresh seafood to impeccably cooked steak and the delicious local rum!

Visit Aapravasi Ghat

One of two UNESCO world heritage sites on the island, Aapravasi Ghat, a Hindi term for Immigration Depot, was the arrival point for over half a million indentured labourers coming to Mauritius, mostly from India to work in the sugar cane industry and thus shaping modern-day society.

Explore the coast

During Matt’s time on the island, he was fortunate enough to experience a mesmerising sunset cruise off the west coast and a tropical snorkelling trip to the once-forgotten island of Ille Des Deux Cocos, as well as learning more about the wonderful mix of cultures and religions that this island is so proud of.

Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant, the second  UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island, is a majestic mountain that rises dramatically from the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. This iconic basaltic monolith, standing at 556 metres, is not only a natural marvel but also a poignant symbol of resistance and freedom. Historically, it served as a refuge for runaway slaves during the 18th and early 19th centuries, who found sanctuary in its rugged, inaccessible cliffs. Today, Le Morne is a popular destination for hiking enthusiasts who are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding lagoon and coastline. The area around Le Morne is equally captivating, featuring pristine beaches, lush greenery, and vibrant coral reefs. Visitors can explore the cultural significance of the site while enjoying activities like kite surfing, snorkelling, and simply basking in the serene beauty of this extraordinary landscape.

Best for Indulgent Luxury

The competition for the most luxurious hotel in Mauritius is fierce! Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa overlooks the expansive blues and brilliant sunsets of Tamarin Bay, in an intimate hideaway on the West Coast with six types of luxurious villas, each reminiscent of the country’s colonial heritage melted with the trends of modernity. Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is a secluded oasis at the edge of an idyllic lagoon on the island’s East Coast, home to every luxury you would expect from any Four Seasons hotel, including stylish villas, private retreats, two golf courses, award-winning overwater Spa, and an exclusive beach on Ile aux Cerfs. Finally, every One&Only property around the world is a deluxe, stylish haven for those who like to be pampered – and One&Only Le Saint Géran is no anomaly. Although currently under construction, it has been awarded the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide 5-Star Award and we can’t wait to see it open its doors again soon.

Best for Nature Seekers

Something the team Savile Row Travel have been echoing for years: Mauritius is not just beach! This island is so much more, with the South packed with national parks, hiking and cycling trails, and endless varieties of colourful birds. The charming lodge of Lakaz Chamarel is perfect for those who want a few days away from the coast in the cooler central plateau immersing themselves in nature – the incredible food here helps as well!

Best for Families

Although lots of hotels in Mauritius have some form of Kids Club, many only cater for very young children or babies. However, the stunning collection of LUX* Hotels & Resorts on the island have facilities and activities to entertain children of all ages, including children’s spa facilities, cooking classes, Kid’s Clubs and Teen’s Clubs, kids menus, family games, watersports and family-friendly accommodation options. Choose from LUX* Grand Baie, LUX* Belle Mare or LUX* Le Morne.

Best for Nightlife Lovers

Contrastingly, the North of the island offers a vibrant nightlife, perfect for those who want to head out and explore rather than eat in-resort. Our favourite nightlife destination is Grand Baie, home to the LUX* Grand Baie and the 4-star Veranda Grand Baie Hotel & Spa – which is right in the heart of the action!
