Discover a captivating fusion of art and history...

Immerse yourself in an environment where each corner is a canvas of rich narratives, blending contemporary elegance with the echoes of a storied past. From thought-provoking artworks to the architectural legacy of the Meier & Frank Building, The Nines invites you to explore a unique tapestry that weaves together the essence of Portland’s cultural heritage.

Art & History

They feature a bold collection of commissioned works exclusively created by local artists. Their extraordinary collection, curated by Paige Powell, a former Warhol confidante, comprised over 400 pieces of art, including sculptures, paintings, and custom installations that grace the atrium, restaurant, library, lobby, and guest rooms.

Art Work

Some of the dynamic and diverse works include Melody Owen’s grand stairwell chandelier titled “Bird Song”, which uses glass, LEDs, and steel to create a 35-foot hanging structure illustrating the audio waves of bird songs from the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, video artist Matt McCormick has created Satellite, an abstract work of images from around Portland, on display in the hotel’s restaurant, Urban Farmer. The Library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves & a billiards table, features local artwork including pieces by filmmaker Gus Van Sant, cartoonist John Callahan, painter Chris Johanson, and emerging artist Nell Warren.

Meier & Frank Building

The Meier & Frank Building is a historic department store in downtown Portland, Oregon. It was originally built in 1909 by the Meier & Frank Company, one of the city’s most prominent retailers. For decades, the retail dynasty created by Aaron Meier and Sigmund Frank was a long-standing hub of commerce for Portland. This iconic monument featured the first escalator installation in Portland and, in 1922, also functioned as the studio for Meier & Frank’s very own radio station. As the premier department store in Portland, clientele often dressed up to look their very best, as this was (and still is) the place to see and be seen. At its peak, the Meier & Frank building had a pharmacy, a pet store, and a deli. Meier & Frank was also Clark Gable’s place of employment before he became a famous actor.

Transformation into a Luxury Hotel

In 2005, the building began its transformation into a luxury hotel. The original exterior was retained, while a seven-story light-filled atrium was created to best access beautiful views and natural light. The architects created a nostalgic, modern approach infusing elements from the worlds of art and fashion, as well as, eclectic nods to Meier & Frank’s retail past. In line with their sustainable values, the building is also LEED Silver Certified. The name “the Nines” was created in homage to the Meier & Frank Building’s roots as a beacon of “dressed to the nines” fashion. Like the original Meier & Frank, they remain dedicated to providing impeccable service and an elevated experience.
